Annual General Meeting.

Notice is given that the Annual General Meeting of the Cheshire County Athletic Association will be held on Wednesday, 25 February 2004 at The Community Centre, Fluin Lane, Frodsham commencing at 7:30pm.

Any Motions for the Agenda must made in writing to the with the Hon Secretary (Brian Warren) by 28 January 2004.

The committee will be proposing two changes to the constitution to provide for the position of a Vice Chairperson and to provide for voting procedures at General Committee meetings.

Success by a Cheshire Athlete in another Sport.

Sarah Vandewalle, an active athlete with Warrington AC, represented Great Britain in October in an Under 18 Modern Pentathlon competition in the Czech Republic as a member of the British Olympic hopefulls squad.  At Under 18 level they only contest 4 different sports, missing out horse riding.  Sarah was 10th individual helping the British team to finish 3rd.

County Championships.

The next County Championships are cross country at the Knight’s Grange Sports Complex, Winsford, on SATURDAY, January 3rd courtesy of Vale Royal BC and Vale Royal AC.  Please note that entries close on 28th December.  The Championship secretary (Sue Morris) expects to be at the Cheshire Cross Country League meeting at Frodsham on that day and will accept final entries then.

The County Championship will be the selection race for the Inter County Cross Country Championships due to be held at Nottingham on March 6th.  The County will again have a coach going to the event to help with transport.

Road Running Championships 2004 : at the last committee meeting it was decided to award the Cheshire 10K Road Running championship for 2004 to Spectrum Striders to be held in with their Birchwood 10K on 22 August (they were the only applicants).  The half-marathon was awarded to the Macclesfield event probably on 26 September, although they are looking at moving one week earlier or later to avoid clashes with other events.

The Inter-county ½ marathon championships are to beld at Ackworth (West Yorks) on 28 March 2004.  Anyone interested in being considered for the Cheshire team please contact Adrian Thiemicke (e-mail :  Tel : 01270 569012)

County Championship dates for the 2004 Track & Field Season are :

Track & Field Championships : 15/16 May at Warrington.

County Track Relays : 11 July at the new track at Stanney Oaks, Ellesmere Port (This is close to the Cheshire Oaks Outlet shopping park!).

Junior Multi-events : 12 September, probably at Macclesfield.

Entries for the National Cross Country Championships (at Temple Newsam Park, near Leeds on 21 February) close first post on Monday 5th January.  You can only enter Senior male and female teams if you entered the North of England championships.  This restriction does not apply to other age groups.

Cheshire Road Running Grand Prix.

Adrian Thiemicke has agreed to organise the Grand Prix event again for 2004 with some changes - but has not had many responses to repeated requests for expressions of interest.  Again a final plea to clubs to respond.  At this stage it is highly unlikely there will be a final event against other Counties.

Cheshire Cross Country League.

The first event will take place as planned at Frodsham on 28 December with the first event at 12:30pm.

The second round will now take place at Stockport (Woodbank Park) on 15 February and the third (final) round at Macclesfield on 14 March, both starting at 12:30pm.

Hamish Thomson remains as League Secretary but just when we thought he had disappeared he was back in touch.  His new address is : 10 Friars Road, Cheadle, Staffs  ST10 1AT (Tel : 01538 754129) E mail (as before) :

Courses for Track & Field Officials.

Courses have been arranged for prospective Officials and will be held on 18 February 2004 at the Community Centre, Fluin Lane, Frodsham commencing at 7pm.  There will be separate lectures for track judging, field event judging and timekeeping.  If there is interest in other duties such as starting and marksman then these will be considered.

Road Race Course Measurement.

Are you interested in becoming a qualified measurer for road race courses?  At the recent North of England Road Running Committee meeting, the co-ordinator for measurements asked for anyone interested in becoming qualified to contact him before a training course can be arranged.  The co-ordinator is Alan Ritchie, 132 Scotby Road, Scotby, Carlisle, Cumbria  Tel : 01228 513200.

At present we are awaiting confirmation concerning 3 persons in Cheshire who went on the previous course, as to whether they are now finally qualified.

UK Athletics Congress, Loughborough 23 November.

Three members of the Cheshire County AA committee attended this meeting, but it appeared that no one else from a Cheshire club attended.  We were all divided into groups (Workshops) to discuss the same topic : “Delivery of Services from the UKA proposed ‘Hubs’ to clubs”.. Although a lot of bullet points were written on flip charts and collected together at the end of the day, they were to a large extent very generalised.  All clubs who have signed up to the UKA Clubs Future scheme should now have received a summary of the Congress.

North of England Matters - 5. “Modernisation”

All clubs should have received recently from the North of England a Briefing Note (unsigned and undated) headed Modernisation the Situation in England.  This originates from the AAA of England following many meetings and discussions between representatives from the North, Midlands and South to the AAA General Committee.  It summarises the England proposal responding to UKA’s radically different structure for athletics. It illustrates how far England is prepared to accept the “9 Hubs” proposal from UKA but retain Territorial organisations for particular functions.

However, the last paragraph refers to a meeting between all of the big players which was due to have taken place at the end of November.  It did not take place and as far as I am aware, has yet to do so.

A Question :

to give you something to do over the New Year :

Who was the first person to run the mile in exactly 4 minutes?

Answers by e-mail please to the Editor.

Please ensure the County Secretary, Brian Warren is informed of any changes of Secretary for your club  (Contact details : Brian Warren, 51 Fairways, Frodsham  WA6 7RY, Tel No : 01928 732529, e-mail :

We would ask those who do receive the Newsletter electronically to “send” it on to their contacts in their club and/or put a paper copy on your Club notice board.

As yet we do not have e-mail contacts in all Cheshire clubs; in some cases we do not have an e-mail contact for the Secretary.  Accepting that not everyone has e-mail (and some might not wish to) we hope that individuals who receive this will pass a paper copy onto their Club secretary.  Where this Newsletter goes to a Club secretary it is taken as official notice of the AGM

The next County committee meeting is the 21st January 2004 at the Community Centre, Fluin Lane, Frodsham at 7:30pm - hopefully we will see your club represented at these meetings.
