With 3 previous CAU champions in the team, the Cheshire men's team had high
hopes of regaining the Rockingham Trophy which it previously won in 1999.
This optimism proved to be fully justified as the team finished on 27
points, 7 clear of local rivals Merseyside, a score which would have taken
second place in the next group up, the Middlesex/Surrey Trophy.
The star of the team was 19 year old Elliot O'Neill (pictured receiving the
trophy), who finished 5th (3rd when 2 non-scorers are discounted) in the
long jump, having set a massive legal pb of 7.39 in qualifying, as well as
finishing 7th in his favoured event the triple jump.
Other big points scorers were defending champion David Brackstone, who
finished 4th in the 400m hurdles, former 110m hurdles champion Dominic
Bradley who finished 5th and former 200m champion Allyn Condon who made the
semi-finals of a very high class 100m.
The women's team also scored well, with junior Becky Ellis taking 4th place
in the 2000m steeplechase, Clare Neve finishing 8th in the pole vault and
Lucy Evans just failing to make the finals of both the 100m and 200m.
