CHESHIRE COUNTY AA AGM

THURSDAY 23RD FEBRUARY 2006

7:30PM  COMMUNITY CENTRE

FLUIN LANE, FRODSHAM

Please send any proposals and nominations for Officers to the County Secretary, Brian Warren before the end of January.

Most of the current Officers are willing to continue in post, if nominated.  The Chairman will not be available for re-election at the AGM.

With regret we note the recent passing of Dorothy Crossley, a long time Secretary of the Cheshire County Schools AA.

Track & Field Performances in 2005.

In the past few weeks Athletics Weekly has published ranking lists of best performers in all age groups for the 2005 track & Field season.

Although I have not had time to compare with previous years there does seem to be more Cheshire athletes listed in the top 20 for 2005, including several in the top 3.  Congratulations to all with the hope that you will continue to enjoy and improve in your athletics.

I received only one answer to the question posed in the November Newsletter - “Who was the 1000th athlete to run under 4 minutes for the mile?”  I gave a clue - it was Tom Carter of Vale Royal AC who achieved this performance in a race at Crystal Palace on 6 August.

The Future - England Athletics.

Under the proposals for the new structure for athletics in England, Cheshire will fall within the North West of England Region, which is already the area covered by our RDC, Michael Hunt.  England Athletics Ltd is due to take over governance for athletics in England from 1st April 2006 although there will be a transition period, for example for Permits, over a number of months from that date.

The Interim Chairman of the NW Region, Charles Gains, attended our December committee meeting to outline the future and his aims for the Region.  The format and structure of the Region will be flexible within a general outline and designed to meet its athletic needs.  Counties will have a significant role to play while it will be clubs who will nominate and vote in the Regional Council, due to come into place soon after 1st April.

Charles stated 3 aims : to improve communication, to address coaching issues and to establish a more sensible competition structure.  Charles  asked ALL to provide him with comments, suggestions and proposals for the future and requested contributors NOT to constrained by what happens now.  Communications can be sent to Charles by post (C Gains, 15 Hall Brow Close, Ormskirk, Lancs  L39 2YX) or by e-mail : charles.gains@btinternet.com

A footnote to the meeting was my disappointment that only one additional club which does not regularly send a member to our committee meetings turned up (so thank you Steve Hammond of Tattenhall Runners for taking the trouble to attend).

I share Charles’s frustration at the problems in communicating with clubs and athletes.  For the past 3 years as County Chairman, I have attempted to improve communication through the Cheshire AA Newsletter building on the earlier efforts of the county secretary, Brian Warren.  But it is of significant dismay to note when I visit various club Headquarters that a copy of the Cheshire Newsletter is not displayed on the club notice board.  Also the lack of response to requests to clubs to submit offers to host for example the Cheshire RR Championships meets with a nil return.
