Outstanding Performances  Indoor :

Congratulations to Hayley Jones (Vale Royal) on winning the AAA National Under 17 Womens 200m title in Birmigham.

Outstanding Performances  Outdoor :

Three major cross country events saw Cheshire athletes performing well, although in reality the events are too close together for the younger athletes.

At the English National championships held at Cofton Park on the SW edge of Birmingham, the Under 15 Boys team from Warrington just missed out on medals finishing 4th, with Daniel Cliffe and Lawrence Walker in the first 20 finishers.  In the U15 Girls race, Heather Timmins (Warrington) also finished inside the first 20 finishers.

Two weeks later the Inter-county championships were held at Nottingham.  Cheshire teams finished 10th or better in four age groups, in competition with over 40 county teams.  The U13 girls were 5th, only 8 points away from second team place and providing the best individual performance of the day through Rebecca Craigie (Macclesfield) who was 7th.  The U17 men finished 6th, U15 Girls 8th and U15 Boys 10th.  The ‘young’ Cheshire senior ladies team finished a pleasing 13th.  Many thanks to our team managers : Julie Hicken, Chris Griffiths (standing in for Richard Mitchell on the day), Shaun McGrath, Adrian Thiemicke, and Marcus Walker who additionally kept order well on the coach.

A week later many of the young athletes were in action again representing Cheshire Schools in the English Schools championships at Norwich.  Running in age groups one year different from the “clubs” age groups the Junior and Intermediate Cheshire teams had excellent results with 2nd in the Inter boys, 4th in the junior boys , 9th in Inter girls and 6th in Junior girls.  These excellent team results gave Cheshire girls victory in the Group B aggregated totals, while the boys were second.  The best individual performace was by Daniel Cliffe in the junior boys event in 3rd place.  Congratulations to the Cheshire Schools.

Cheshire Road Running Grand Prix.

Three races have now been held and the 4th race takes place very soon (April 5th - Chester Spring 5 mile).

Adrain Thiemicke has published the situation after the Wilmslow ½ marathon, which shows a clear lead for the Wilmslow men, but a close fight in the ladies section between Wilmslow and Macclesfield.  In addition Adrian has produced an individual positions table - possibly the County AA will provide individual trophies at the end of the season.  Following feedback from clubs there will be 7 races this season with 5 to count for teams - this means that the Congleton ½ marathon, hosting the County championships will not be part of the GP series.  It was felt that having two ½ marathons in the GP is sufficient.

Archives

Hamish Thomson has collected together some significant information relating to the post second world war activities (1947 to circa. 1985) of the Cheshire County AA Athletic Association (essentially the men’s body).  The committee feel that this material should be deposited in a suitable archive, such as the salt mines of Cheshire! (seriously, the Cheshire County Record office store documents in the salt-mines under or near Northwich).  Further information on the material is available from Hamish or the Newsletter editor.
