North of England Inter-county Track & Field Championships.

Congratulations to all of the Cheshire athletes who represented the County in these championships held at Cudworth on 20th August.  The Under 15 girls team achieved the best placing with 2nd out of the 10 County teams competing.  We had a number of individual winners : Dominic Bradley in the 100m and 110mH, D Greta in the JT, Hayley Jones in the 300m, Beth Hicken in the 200m, Sian Kelman in the LJ and also the U17 Ladies team in the Medley relay.  All athletes contributed points

A disappointment was the non-appearance of a few athletes who had accepted invitations to take part but did not appear on the day.  We also had some vacancies in some events, particularly at senior level.

Other outstanding performances :

In the AAA of England U17 championships, Hayley Jones (Vale Royal) won the 300m.

Elliott O’Neill (Macclesfield) and Roger Bate (Trafford) competed for Great Britain U23s in the Triple Jump and Hammer respectively in the U23 International at Sport City on Aug 6th.

Just as this goes to press we learn that Cecilia Greasley (Cheshire Hill Runners, formerly of Macclesfield H) won the LV45 World Hill Running title in the World Masters Championships held at Keswick.

And continuing the success of Cheshire athletes in gaining international selection for Hill & Fell running, Jason McGonigle (Warrington AC) will represent England in the World Junior Championships in New Zealand in a week’s time

County Championships.

The County  Multi-events, organised by Jim Lethbridge of Handforth, Wilmlsow and Alderley Edge, were held successfully at Macclesfield on 11 September with good competition from Cheshire athletes as well as guests from adjoining counties.

The 10K road running championships were held in conjunction with the Birchwood event on a hot Sunday in August.  Mike Proudlove, 2nd overall won the mens championship while Vanessa Mulholland (Altrincham) won the Ladies.

No response to this last month, so repeated!!

At the last Cheshire committee meeting, Shaun McGrath (Vale Royal) suggested that to encourage and help the smaller clubs, the distance relays in the trak chmapionships should all be 3x800m.  What do you think?  Please let us know.

Future County Championships  :

Road Running Championships : the Half-marathon championship will be held within the Congleton event on 9 October.

Road Relays : these are being held at Blackpool (on 17 September) as part of the NW Counties event as in the past 5 years.  Entries are now closed.

Fell Running : the Cheshire Championship will again be held within the Clwydian Hills event on SUNDAY, 6 November from Cilcain Village Hall, near Mold (Map Ref : SJ177653).  The race is 10 miles in length, involving 3100ft of climbing.  Over 18s; entry fee £3; enter on day only. Further details 01352 741822.

Cross Country Championships 2006 : Plans have now been progressed to hold this on Sunday 8 January at the Joey the Swan Recreation area, Wistaston, Crewe.

Cheshire Road Running Grand Prix.

Six of the 7 races have now taken place, leaving the final race at Guilden Sutton 10K, near Chester to come.  Wilmslow Men and Macclesfield Ladies have already won the team awards, but the individual awards still remain to be decided. Many thanks to Adrian Thiemicke who has once again co-ordinated the Cheshire RR GP.  Hopefully he will carry on next year and you, the clubs, will continue to support the initiative to increase participation by club athletes in Cheshire road races.

In 2006 we are proposing including a handicap competition within the GP series, based on the Endurance Handicap Proposals currently being assessed.  Club contacts were circulated with a questionnaire for individual athletes to complete to assist in establishing the handicap parameters.  Response from road runners in Cheshire clubs has been abysmal!

Another repeat statement ! :

The County have received a letter from the UK Counties Athletic Union inviting applications from ½ marathon organisers to apply to host the Inter-county championships (presumably for 2007).  If interested please inform Adrian who will then pass on your interest.
