Success at Higher Levels - Track & Field.

The summer has seen a number of successes for Cheshire athletes at higher levels.  Skimming through the pages of Athletics Weekly reveals, in approximately reverse chronological order, the following were picked up :

In the North v. Midlands v. South match, Clare Neve (Trafford) was 2nd in the Ladies PV, while Elliott O’Neill (Macclesfield) took part in the Men’s long and triple jumps, both athletes representing the North.

Roger Skedd (City of Stoke) won the British Universities Multi-events championships having earlier in the season won the Northern title and 3rd in the AAA of England championship.

Adrian Thiemicke brought to my attention that Andy Leigh (City of Stoke) won the 100m at the British Masters Championships in the new V35 class (Vets get younger!!).  He was also second in the 200m

Two Cheshire athletes had victories in the annual Schools International U18 meeting with the other home countries, held this year in Northern Ireland.  Hayley Jones (Vale Royal) won the 300m event and Stevie Stockton (also Vale Royal) the 1500m.  Hayley had previously won the English Schools Inter Girls 300m, while Stevie was second in the 1500m.  Other Cheshire athletes who were medalists in the English Schools championships were : will Lowndes (Liverpool H) in the Senior Boys shot and J Hopley in the Senior JT.  Tom Corrigan (LiverpoolH) won the Junior Boys 200m, but is not qualified for our Cheshire championships.  The inter girls 4x100m relay was won by Cheshire and this age group won the Group B title.  Overall the Cheshire team were third in the aggregated Group B team table.

In the AAA Under 23 championships, Elliott O’Neill (Macclesfield) was third in the triple jump 9and 4th in the Long jump) while Becky Ellis (Vale Royal) was third in the U20 3000m steeplechase.

In North of England championships a large number of medals have been won by Cheshire athletes this season.  At Senior level, Dominic Bradley (Birchfield) won the 110mH, Elliott O’Neill the TJ and Clare Neve (Trafford) the PV.  Second places were obtained by Roger Bate (Trafford) in the HT and by D Greta (Warrington in the JT, while Matt Barnes of Altrincham was 3rd in the 1500m.  In the U20 championships, Ben green (Warrington) won the 1500m, while silver medals were won by Will Lowndes in the SP and by Hayley Jones in the 200m and 400m.  Three U17 titles were won in total, one each by Stevie Stockton (3000m), H Hewitson (Vale Royal) in the TJ and Lauren Hunt (West Cheshire) in the DT.  Lauren was also third in the SP while Louise Woodward (Warrington) took bronze in the 80mH.  Six silver medals were won in U15 events : S Broadhurst (Warrington) in the 800m, A Whitton (West Cheshire) in the TJ, S Kelman (West Cheshire) in the 100m, Stephanie Blackwell (Wirral) in the 75mH and Stephanie Owens (West Cheshire) in the SP and DT.  Stephanie Owens also won the Welsh U15 titles in the discus, shot and hammer.

A large number of other Cheshire athletes competed in most of these championships some obtaining top 6 placings.  All will have gained experience from these championships which should contribute to their athletic development.

The North of England Inter County Track & Field Championships take place on Saturday 20 August at Cudworth (near Barnsley).  We are allowed one athlete in each of the events at U15, U17 and senior level (juniors can compete as Seniors).  The Cheshire team managers (Julie Hicken from Warrington for the U15 and U17s, Ashley Pritchard for the Senior Men and Pauline Lynch for the Senior Ladies) are in the process of selecting teams for this event..  we wish the Cheshire teams success in this event.

County Championships.

The County Track relay championships were held at Ellesmere Port on 3 July with an increased entry.  There was strong competition, particularly in the younger age group events.  Two records were broken.  In the U15 boys 4x800m, the Warrington quartet knocked a massive 10 seconds of the previous record set last year also by a Warrington team, while the West Cheshire U15 girls sprint squad twice broke the record for the 4x100m, eventually reducing the record by 1 second.

At the last Cheshire committee meeting, Shaun McGrath (Vale Royal) suggested that to encourage and help the smaller clubs, the distance relays should all be 3x800m.  What do you think?  Please let us know.
