Successes in North of England Championships

2006 has started with significant successes both Indoors and outside for members of Cheshire Clubs and Cheshire qualified athletes.

Indoors at Sheffield, at the North of England Junior championships, Hayley Jones (now a member of Wigan) won the Under 20 400m in a Championship best time and also the 200m.  Hannah Hewitson of Vale Royal won the Under 17 Triple jump also in a championship best, while Jack Andrew of Macclesfield won the Under 15 Long Hump.  Silver medals were won by Craig France of west Cheshire in the Under 20 60m hurdles, Morgan Brown (Vale Royal) in the Under 17 200m and Jack Andrew in the U15 Boys 60m hurdles.  Bronze medals were won by Gareth Preston in the Under 17 Long Jump and Andrew Witton in the Under 17 Triple Jump, both from West Cheshire, while Beth Hicken of Warrington took the bronze in the Under 15 Girls 200m.  In all there were 32 Cheshire club entrants in these championships, 24 of whom reached the finals in their events.  (Thanks to Julie Hicken for the details of this event).

Meanwhile, outdoors on a brilliantly sunny but very cold afternoon at Witton Park, Blackburn, Cheshire clubs and individuals had a successful day at the North of England Cross Country Championships. Individually Stevie Stockton of Vale Royal won the Under 17 ladies race, with team mate Hannah Weedall taking the bronze medal despite running much of the race without shoes or socks.  Rebecca Craigie of Macclesfield took individual silver in the Under 15 Girls race.  Teams also won medals, with the Warrington Under 15 Boys team led home by S Broadhurst in 8th place taking the gold medals.  In the Under 17 ladies event it was outstanding to see two Cheshire clubs on the podium.  Vale Royal took silver medals behind Rotherham, while Warrington won bronze with Heather Timmins in 5th place behind Stevie and Hannah.  Other top 10 individual placings were 9th by Tim Pattison (Macclesfield) in the Under 17 mens race, where Vale Royal were just outside the medals in 4th place, and Lloyd Hilton (Macclesfield) 6th in the Under 13 Boys race.

These performances show, I feel, an increasing level of performance by our younger athletes in the County.

Elsewhere, our Senior Men’s cross country champion, Rob Birchall, was third in the Midland Counties CC Championships.

Cheshire Cross Country Championships

A successful day at Joey the Swan recreational area near Crewe provided a new course (well almost new, except for those with long memories of a Cheshire CC League event on New Years Day in the early 1980’s).  We received a number of very positive comments about the course, marking and marshalling.  Thanks are due, amongst others, to South Cheshire Harriers for their input to the event - the second time they have been involved with a County event (the first being the 10K road race).  Hopefully it will encourage some of the other (newer) clubs in Cheshire to become involved with hosting Cheshire championships.

Also, the new Cheshire Championship medals were well received.  Thanks to Bob Lynch who pursued the production of the medals after we had agreed the design; and to George Bunner for contributing to the costs of “set-up”, by a donation from the profits of the Social Evening a year ago.

Congratulations to Cheshire Schools who as a results of their performances at the English Schools CC Championships in 2005, have  been invited to send teams to the London Mini-marathon races which are held on the same day as the London Marathon.

Congratulations also to Helsby High School who following success in the English Schools CC Cup events have been invited to represent England in a European Schools race in Italy in April

Cheshire Road Running Grand Prix.

The first race has been held (4 Villages half-marathon) and will be followed by the Alsager 5 mile and Wilmslow ½ marathon.  The results (after a lot of work by Adrian to clear up a number of problems) from the first race show some significant changes from last year - but this is only the first race!.  The first trial of the proposed National Endurance Handicap Scheme (using this race) produced some interesting results.

A message to road race organisers :

Do you use a data base when processing your entries?  Experience at two recent races in Cheshire who do, points to the need to examine entry information closely.  Athletes change clubs, some clubs have changed their name  and some “clubs” are no longer bone fide clubs!.  Please check the entrants for your events, particularly their club name and alter your data base if necessary.  Often there appears to be confusion between Warrington AC and Warrington Road Runners - these are two different clubs.  (I used to have problems with WAC on entry forms - Wirral AC or Warrington AC?).  Some of the confusion is athletes themselves.  Rivacre Runners are now Ellesmere Port RCEA Technology resigned from membership in May 2005; Capenhurst RC have been deleted from membership for non-payment of affiliation and membership fees.

Cheshire Cross Country League

Although not part of the Cheshire County AA organisation, (but  a Cheshire club or Association), the League does provide for much needed cross country competition for those Cheshire clubs which choose to take part.  Over the past 12 months there has been a move to rationalise cross country leagues with the creation of a “Manchester Area” League by merging the Manchester & District, North West Women’s and Cheshire Cross Country Leagues.  The AGM of the Cheshire League is being held on Tuesday 11 April at the Community Centre, Fluin Lane, Frodsham.  This meeting will decide the future of the Cheshire CC League

****Track & Field Officials - Courses****

The County will be organising courses at Warrington (Victoria Park) on Saturday 4 March 2006.  Please ensure the County Officials Secretary is aware of your interest.  Contact details : joseph.shellhorn@tesco.net  or  01244 679196)  Joe has the details of those who responded to the previous request.

PLEASE advertise to those in your club who might be interested.

Other Courses/Jobs :

Most clubs with Child Protection Officers will have received notice inviting applicants to be trained by UK Athletics to become tutors for Club Welfare advice courses.  We feel it is important that the county has at least one person who is willing to do this so hopefyully someone will take up the challenge.

The County already has one person (Bob Lynch) who tutors the UK Athletics Health & Safety course for Technical Officials.

On the Officials front - the education system is in a state of change with a radically different approach likely in the future.  Again prospective tutors for the new approach will receive training.  Anyone who is interested in becoming a tutor should contact Joe Shellhorn, the County Officials secretary.

Most clubs will have received a copy of the advert for a part time Community Sports Athletics Coach to work for Sport Cheshire.  This is of interest for Level 2 coaches and above and the person while working for Sport Cheshire will become involved with Cheshire athletic clubs and the County Association.  Applications close Feb 14th.  Contact details : 01606 871812, Ext 200 or e-mail : support@sportcheshire.org

NEWSLETTER

Is it of use?? Is it of interest??  Is it widely read??  Could you get by without it??  Would County Athletics suffer if there wasn’t a Newsletter??

A year ago I asked for someone else to offer to take on the Newsletter.  Apart from two issues (which Bob Lynch did in my absence) there has been no offer.  Again I make the same request!

My thanks to all who have provided information over the past 3 years- and also those who check my spellings!! (At least I know you red it),   You should see some of the e-mails I get - English seems to have disappeared!!!
