Cheshire T&F League – unfortunately it is not possible to bring you the league standings after round two.

Cheshire athletes who were successful in the Northern Athletics Senior and U20 event at Wavertree in June were as follows: Charlotte Roach (Vale Royal) U20 1500m Gold; Lauren Hunt (West Cheshire) U20 Discus Silver; David McKay (West Cheshire) SM Javelin Bronze.

The inter Counties match at Bedford saw the Cheshire mens’ team with the Middlesex/Sussex trophy and gain promotion to the top division of counties.  Comprising just four athletes, the ladies finished second and narrowly missed out on promotion.  Eliot O’Neil won the long jump in a quality field which included Phillips Idowu and was fourth in the triple jump.  Dorel Greta grabbed gold in the javelin event. Dave McKay took fifth place in the javelin (competing as a non-scorer), as did Matt Barnes (mile), and Roger Skedd (110m hurdles).  Roger is competing for Great Britain in the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge in Arles.  Katie Read and Emily collected silver medals in the 100m hurdles and steeplechase respectively, whilst Lucy Evans who competed in five races over the weekend and finished seventh in her 100m.  Other team members were Darren Scott, Andrew Hopkinson, Stephen Butterfield and Hannah Hewitson.

Stephanie Owens (West Cheshire) has been awarded her first Senior Welsh vest and will compete in an International Throws meeting, to be held on 8 July in Croatia.

Congratulations to Hayley Jones (Wigan & D) who has selected for Great Britain in the 200m event at  European Junior Championships later this summer.

A PLEA FOR HELP

The Northern Athletics Inter-county Track and Field meeting is being held on 26th August at Hull.  Unfortunately Julie Hicken is unable to act as team manager this year as she is on holiday.  The County needs one or more persons who are prepared to act as team manager(s) for this meeting which gives the opportunity for Cheshire athletes to experience representative competition at a higher level (U15, U17, Jun/Sen).  Would interested persons please contact the County Secretary (Brian Warren) as soon as possible.  The County will again provide a contribution towards travel costs.

A REQUEST

There has been increasing concern particularly in road running over the increased use by athletes of ear phones connected to various electronic devices presumably providing “music while you run”.  THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD.  A report by the chief Police observer at the Chester half marathon raised this issue because of his direct observation of a female runner wearing such a device narrowly avoiding being run down by a car that was following her when she decided to cross over the road without looking (and hearing).  The police eventually caught up with this person and spoke to her about the incident to which she was totally oblivious.  This is not an isolated incident.  The estimate on that race was that up to 10% of the 1900 finishers were wearing such devices.  A proposal for a new Rule banning such devices has been sent to UK athletics who are receptive to the change.  THINK BEFORE YOU LISTEN.

This hazard is not limited to road running – I had direct experience at a recent track meeting where an athlete complained of missing their event – the individual was wearing headphones and had not heard the announcement for the event.
