CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
Congratulations to all Cheshire athletes who competed in the ESAA event at Temple Newsam, Leeds. A special plaudit must go to Heather Timmins who finished first in the Senior Girls Race, steering home Charlotte Roach, Rheannon Rainford, Rachel Clews, Lucy Gemmell and Hannah Weedall to take third place in the team event. Just outside the medals were the team who came home in fourth place in the Inter Boys event. Led home by Daniel Cliffe, the other team members were Stephen Broadhurst, Matthew Jackson, Andrew Clews, Jelle Verwer and Edward Williams. Full results and pictures can be viewed on the ESAA website.
Additional comments (from John Driscoll) – adding to Ellen’s report, Rebecca Craigie was 9th in the Inter Girls race while collectively the Senior, Inter and Junior Boys team totals gave then victory in Group B (which is dependent on population size), while the 3 girls age groups were second in theirs. Excellent performances which provided a culmination to another very successful cross country season for Cheshire athletes – with another athlete absent from the schools but on international duty the same weekend in the heat and humidity of Mombassa, Kenya in the Junior Ladies World Championships – Stevie Stockton, who survived a very torrid race which saw 20 of the 87 starters fail to finish!
Two weeks previously to some extent as a lead up to the Schools championships, the National CC Championships on a windswept but largely dry course near Sunderland again produced individual and team awards for Cheshire clubs. Heather Timmins (Warrington AC) was second in the Under 17 race held in conjunction with the Junior race in which Stevie Stockton (Vale Royal) also won a silver medal (Vale Royal won 3rd team medals in this age group with Charlotte Roach 11th). In the Under 13 Girls race M Huxley of Vale Royal was 10th. Meanwhile on the male side, the Warrington U17 mens team were second on count back having the same points total as the winners (Daniel Cliffe was their first counter in 14th place).
An excellent run by Callum Murray (Macclesfield) saw him finish 8th in the Under 13 boys race.
